The asynchronous tool I chose was Facebook. Facebook can be used to network between people, groups, and organizations as well as chat and share information and pictures. Using the chat feature, Facebook can be an asynchronous tool or synchronous tool. I hate to admit it but, I use Facebook on a daily basis. There are 2 main ways I use it: 1) to organize functions in my son's Cub Scout pack. This is our second year having a closed group and it makes communication much easier. I set up events and members sign up through our page. It is also a wonderful tool to have questions answered in a timely, informative way. 2) I like to share pictures on Facebook with my family. We are spread out all over the United States so, using Facebook, it makes it easy to share what is going on with my family and keep in touch with the rest of my family. Today is actually Facebook's 10th anniversary and I can't believe it has been around that long (I joined in 2006).
The synchronous tool I chose was Fuze. Tonight, I learned how to use the Fuze app for my iPhone. I used this to video, voice, and text chat about the Flat Classroom. I was very thrilled when this worked tonight because my son had basketball. So, I plugged in my headphones and listened and even got in the car and went to dinner listening. I really enjoyed this app because I could see students in a class all on their iPads with this app chatting and getting real face time with students across the globe. Another way students could use this would be to let others see around the school or on projects they are working on. Here is the Fuze website
3/2/14 Wiki #4 Select a popular social media that students are now using. Educate yourself on the proper use. Interview a student using the tool already and ask them about the problems or issues they have observed. The social media that I chose is Instagram. Instagram is a social media that focuses on sharing pictures with friends. I asked 8th grader, Luke, about what social media he uses. He said he uses Instagram because Facebook and Twitter are for “old people.” Luke told me that Instagram is an easy way to keep up with his friends and see what they are doing. He said it also includes # and @ so you can incorporate things you are interested in. He said the only problem he sees is when people make fun of others (cyberbullying). He said that very rarely do his friends actually post something mean but they talk about other people’s pictures and laugh. He said he was embarrassed to say that he has been guilty of posting mean things to people and knows that he shouldn’t do that. Another problem he has seen is that kids make profiles without their parents knowing. Those profiles are the ones that include pants down or shirts up. He also admitted to looking at those even though he knows he shouldn’t. I asked him why he did that since he knows he shouldn’t. Luke told me that he is interested in what others are doing and his mom caught him once and took away his phone. Here is a link to my Instagram account. I mostly use it to post Disney stuff.
